This blog was originally about affirmative action at Washington State University in Pullman, WA and how it impacts the admissions process at educational institutions. My original intentions were to identify the attitudes that students had about affirmative action in general and to explore different stories about how affirmative action has impacted particular students. As I researched the subject, I slowly shifted my focus from just WSU students to the actual causes of the issue. The purpose of this blog has evolved into something much more meaningful than just surveying current attitudes. This blog is now about the underlying issues of why we even need affirmative action. I wanted to explore how prejudice occurs, what contributes to discrimination, and what can we change in our own behavior to prevent discrimination. My goal was to draw awareness to the issue because many people don’t recognize the various forms of discrimination. I hope that after reading this blog, people will be more aware of their actions and the way they view others. I hope that we can learn to not judge each other based on our appearances because if we can achieve that, hopefully we can end discrimination. If we can end discrimination, our society will no longer need affirmative action.
